Behavior of Smoke

The unique behavior of smoke makes a fire loss very complex.  It is very important to have a trained technicians at the loss location.  Kleenup Restoration Inc., has the experience in dealing with fire & smoke restoration because we have taken the time to know smoke!

  • Smoke will always drift to cooler areas and the upper levels of a building.
  • Smoke flows through plumbing systems, using holes around pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke will greatly affect the restoration process.

Types of Smoke

In order to properly address the situation, Kleenup tests the smoke to see which of the following types of fire took place.

  • Wet Smoke - Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.  Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke - Fast burning at high temperatures.
  • Protein - Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, pungent odor.
  • Fuel Oil Soot - Furnace puff backs cause fuel oil soot.
  • Other Types - Tear gas, fingerprint powder and fire extinguisher residue are other types.

After the type of smoke is identified, pre-testing on the property is performed to determine the following:

  • The most effective cleaning method

  • What can be restored versus what can be replaced

  • Conditions to the property before the damage occurred

  • The full extent of the loss

  • Eliminate needless replacements

Pre-testing also allows the Kleenup technician to focus on saving precious items for the insured, and in a time of emergency, that is what is needed.
